The Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve 5th Anniversary: PHBR Symposium 2026 was successfully held to commemorate five years of the Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve (PHBR) and to bring together experts, academics, stakeholders, and partners under the theme “From Commitment to Action: Delivering the Hangzhou Strategic Action Plan Through Partnership and Innovation.”
The symposium featured keynote addresses by Dr. Engin Koncagul, Senior Programme Officer for Natural Sciences, UNESCO Regional Office Jakarta, and Mr. Siva Kumar a/l Solay Rajah, Undersecretary of the Biodiversity and Forestry Management Division, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES).
The programme also provided a platform for knowledge-sharing and exchange of perspectives among representatives from various agencies, institutions, and organisations, including TPr. Gs. Mohd Bashir Sulaiman of the Penang Island City Council (MBPP), Puan Hani Nabilia Muhd Sahimi of Penang National Park, Puan Noor Kamilah Omar of Penang Botanic Gardens, Dr. Abe Woo Sau Pinn of Universiti Sains Malaysia, and Mr. Ong Kok Peng, Founder of NatureWalks@ Penang Hill and Nature Green Farm.
The symposium concluded with a panel discussion moderated by Prof. Dr. Siti Azizah Mohd Nor of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, featuring Mr. Danny Chua of The Habitat Group, Mr. Joseph Goh of Entopia by Penang Butterfly Farm, and Mr. Kanda Kumar of the Malaysian Nature Society.
The PHBR Symposium 2026 reaffirmed the importance of partnership, innovation, knowledge-sharing, and collective action in advancing the conservation and sustainable management of the Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve.
